Around the web: A collection of today's great blogs and websites

I had originally tried to post this yesterday, but Blogger kind of died on me! Anyway, a collection of today's yesterday's blogs that I wanted to share.

While catching up on Facebook and Blogger, I came across some really neat things that I wanted to pass on:

- My old high school buddy Crystal has joined the world of blogging and is bringing freebies and giveaways with Thrifty & Frugal Living.Check out her current giveaways and make sure to read up on all the freebies that are around the web now:

Snow White's Blog Shop is a BzzAgent and received a huge shipment of new Cover Girl products. What's a BzzAgent? Sign up here and review the program. You get to try out products and use word of mouth marketing to create a "buzz." I have been a member for several years now. I recently was a member of their L'Oreal lash lengthing mascara campaign.

Find out how to score free lint rollers at CVS at A Day in the Life.

Arbor Mist (my favorite cheap wine) joins Twitter.

Shop early for cheesy Valentine's Day gifts at Personalization Mall. Get 20% off with the coupon code 'Cabinluv' until January 31st. Get up to 1,000 points if you shop through MyPoints or 8% cash back through Ebates. I saw some really cute things up there that might make someone who has no clue what to get their significant other for Valentine's Day.

Frugal & Fabulous got another great score this week with CVS' Pepsi/Frito Lay sale.

Coffee filters have many uses. Just check out Hodgepodge Life for some creative tips!

Even with the crappy quality of the iPhone camera, you can still see how beautiful it was this morning. Taken while driving from Clearwater to Tampa over the bridge.

I would pick something beautiful but not entirely useful -- Italian.

New Year, New Makeup: Time to stock up

Every once in a while it's a good idea to chuck all that old makeup (especially mascara!) because it gets gross after a while. Colors aren't as vibrant and did you know that you're supposed to replace your mascara every three months? When you think about the germs and bacteria that can accumulate in our makeup bag, it's always refreshing to have a clean slate and start over. Since it's a new year, I figured it was time for a makeup makeover. There are tons of great deals out there that makes it easy to replenish your stash for a good price. Here's a brief look at my scores this week:

Clinique: I needed powder--badly. I think I had been harboring my current compact for almost two years. While Clinique products obviously last forever, it was time to get a fresh one. Clinique is currently have a promotion for free shipping on any order over $50 and a free Valentine's Day pink roped handle tote is automatically included in your shopping cart (while supplies last) when you spend $30. Ideas to get your cart past $50: Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion in a tube for $17 and my favorite eyeliner of all time Cream shaper in Eqyptian.

E.L.F.: I was skeptical at first about this cheap brand. With most products falling in between the $1 to $3 price range, there's really no reason to not try one of everything out. I became a fan when I picked up some silver eyeshadow from a Target clearance rack, and I realized that their products were not so "cheap" even though they were low cost. Free Sample Freak always posts coupon codes for E.L.F. and last week there was a free shipping code (sorry ladies, it expired !). I was able to get 13 products for $21. While I can't say how high quality they will be, the price is so low that it's worth a shot. Among the things that E.L.F. has includes eyeshadows, bronzers, eyeliners, lip gloss and even beauty tools like tweezers.

  • Edit: E.L.F. is offering a free 10 free $1 products with any $20 purchase. Enter code '2010' at checkout! Let me know what it is!

CVS: Perhaps the best score of the week is at CVS. For about two weeks now, they have marked down many cosmetics to 50% and even 75% off (on top of their normal cosmetics sales!). I managed to get 4 Rimmel lip glosses, 11 eyeshadows of various brands and more bronzer for about $20. Check your local CVS and look for the mark downs, and Cover Girl and Revlon cosmetics are on sale this week too. See all the sale ads at I Heart CVS.

Here's to a new year with a "new face." :) Happy makeup hunting!

  • Edit: I forgot the best part! Both Clinique and E.L.F. are part of Ebates' cash back program. I managed to get about $3.50 back after both purchases. Make sure to join! ;)

Ebates vs. MyPoints

I can be a little out of control with my online shopping. Sometimes days in the office are slow and you can only play Bejeweled Blitz for so long. I had always been a MyPoints kind of girl: check my email and get 5 points for reading or 25 points for joining some newsletter. Occasionally I would make a Vera Bradley purchase to give me about 50 points. It seemed like it took literally forever to get enough points to get something worthwhile. I have been a member about two years and just redeemed points to get my 4th gift card ($25 to Macy's). Previously I had earned $25 to Target, $25 to Outback Steakhouse and another $25 to Macy's. Sure, getting something free for essentially doing nothing is great. I can't be picky, yet the process just felt like forever.

I discovered Ebates through another blog, and I have been giving it a go. So far, I am impressed with the cash back deals and I have made several purchases. Perhaps seeing things in terms of cash back makes me like this site more. Instead of seeing "1 point per purchase" like MyPoints, I see "3% cash back." If it makes any sense, I feel like Ebates is more of a money maker than MyPoints. I purchased an Entertainment Book yesterday and received $6 cash back! MyPoints offered 500 points for the same transaction. Considering a $25 Target gift card requires 3,900 points... the points versus cash back does not translate similarly. To sign up for Ebates, here is my referral link. You will get $5 for signing up (and so will I!).

Either way, I enjoy using both sites. They are very user-friendly and definitely should be your "go to" before committing to any online purchase. I have just signed up for Swag Bucks as well, and I will soon learn how to conquer that site. If anyone has any pointers, I would love to hear them!

1. You have a chance to follow your dreams--starting with today.
2. Wishing there was sunshine right now!
3. There is a lack of weekend plans at the moment.
4. Party now and pay later. o.O --> In regards to my thesis...
5. It's time to get ready for the weekend.
6. The weekend is up in the air but at least I can relax.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to spending time with Scotty (and hoping his mouth is recovered from the root canal), tomorrow my plans include shopping and Sunday, I want to sleep in!

Friday Follow

I love to read blogs and am always looking for more to follow. I have found a collection of bloggers that participate in a Friday Follow that encourages others to explore and find some new blogging buddies. From mommies to crafters, this blog list has a wide variety of interesting and innovative topics. I'm not quite sure what I add to the list, but it's certainly something fun to be a part of on a dreary Friday such as this one.

Weekend Recap

Friday: Date night dinner at Frenchy's. Grouper, scallops, and shrimp platter with Bud Light Wheat. I am not sure if this counts as part of my diet (I did get everything grilled through). Enjoyed a drink at the Dunedin House of Beer.
Saturday: Woke up really, really late--like 2 p.m. Sleep was definitely needed after that busy first week of the semester. Got motivated and went to a group fitness class for this "contest" that I am (we were given pre-tests that involved running a 1/4 mile, flexibility, push ups, sit ups, etc.). Got all dressed up only to find out that there was a torrential DOWNPOUR. Drove to Bahama Breeze while my passengers were scared for their life. Ended up at The Venue for a Baby Anne show. Too packed to move, but found a cozy spot by the bar. Passed out late.
Sunday: Was up by 8 a.m. for no good reason other than to play with the puppy and upload photos. Ate a delicious breakfast at Angie's in Downtown Clearwater. Again, another meal that was probably not diet friendly. Walked Pier 60 (the first time I actually went all the way down to the end). Headed to Downtown Dunedin where we started with a beer at Dunedin House of Beer. Walked down to the marina and sat at the pier here. Explored shops on the Main Street in town and I ended up with green apple riesling from a local winery (I didn't even know we HAD one!). Mojitos at Casa Tina, more beers at DHOB, and extreme nap time followed.

It was a beautiful weekend with beautiful people.

Friday Fill In: #159

ffi

1. The lesson I learned yesterday was not to give up. Changing graduate programs after finishing everything except a thesis would be silly.
2. I'm glad to live in a great place where friends and family meet.
3. All these years I was always interested in school and now I could care less.
4. The beach was gorgeous when I arrived (Please summer-- come quick!).
5. The truth is I am truly happy.
6. Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA' is what I remember most from that day (My crazy birthday of course!).
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to date night, tomorrow my plans include seeing Baby Anne at The Venue and Sunday, I want to enjoy my boy.

Today's Pic (s): Puppy Power

He is just so adorable. He is officially named Kaze -- short for Kamikaze. He is about 6 weeks old now and as each day passes he gets more and more hyper!

The boy is not so bad either. ;)

Today's Contest: Cook Yourself Thin

One of the blogs that I follow, Running from the Law, is holding a giveaway for a cookbook with "skinny" recipes. Since one of my New Year's resolutions includes not eating junk and cooking at home more, this would certainly give me guidance in the kitchen. I'm not going to lie though... I'm probably most excited for the Pineapple Mojito recipe. Hey, it's hard to diet and drink!

Check out the giveaway over at her blog here and good luck! She's also a pretty snazzy blogger and her wedding pictures were too adorable.

Things to do in 2010

I saw this on a few other blogs, and I figured I might as well do this too. Resolutions can be hard to follow for some people (I'm still doing pretty decent on my goals), so this survey is instead supposed to look at your "goals."

One thing I will learn: Patience. I want to graduate tomorrow, but I have to put in long hours and hard work.

One place I will go: I am certainly crossing my fingers for a cruise to Mexico at the end of the year.

One physical habit I will break: Being lazy, wearing my hair up to work all the time

One physical habit I will cultivate: I will continue my fitness goals and keep meeting with a trainer so that I can essentially learn how to work out.

One mental habit I will break: Procrastination. That thesis is really not writing itself.

One relationship I’ll repair: I should do more to keep in touch with my family -- especially my brother.

One work habit I will change: Use my spare time efficiently by working on long term projects and school work (and not Bejeweled Blitz!).

One thing I’ll throw out: I have a ton of magazines waiting to be recycled and tons of clothes that need to get donated to Goodwill.

A second thing I’ll throw out: I really need to do a sock drawer clean-out.

One thing I’ll eat more often: Vegetables.

One thing I’ll eat less: Fast food. I only ate McDonalds once this week -- I would say this is progress.

One thing I’ll drink more: Water, water and more water. One of the blogs that I follow recently posted some helpful information about water here. We all "know" this stuff but frequently forget just HOW important water is to our health.

One thing I’ll drink less: Beer -- too many filling calories. I will save the beers for date nights with my boy. A girl can cheat on her eating goals once a week, right?

One resentment I’ll get over: I do not really have any resentments that need to be addressed.

One person I’ll treat more respectfully: I try to treat everyone with respect, and I will work on continuing that.

One thing I’ll spend less money on: Beer. Fast food.

One other change I’ll make in my finances: I should actually use that savings account.

One thing I’ll spend less time doing: Eating. Napping.

And a thing I’ll spend more time doing: Working out. Walking the dogs. Riding my bike.

As I read over this, I realize that I'm pretty blessed to have such a simple life. Things are not complicated and I have real good friends to help out along the way.

Here's to starting a new decade full of determination and focus.

Daily Pic: Our New Addition

The newest member of this household is a chow /akita mix pup that we adopted from the Humane Society. He is as yet unnamed, but some suggestions in the running include Kamikaze (after Helen Keller's akita -- the first one in America), Hemi (short for Hemmingway -- my beau's favorite), Hunter (short for Hunter S. Thompson -- again about favorite of the boy), and Jude. I've been calling it Buddy all weekend just because it's a filler name for when you don't know it.

He weighs three pounds and is six weeks old. I do not know how people can adult dogs that weigh that much, because he is constantly wrapping around my legs and he is hard to see sometimes! I am actually looking forward to him growing to be a bigger dog, and I won't have to worry about him rolling off the bed hurting himself.

1. There are places I would love to travel to, but I secretly would be frightened upon arriving.
2. I hope the Florida sunshine will blow those clouds away.
3. Standing in the cold weather of tonight makes me grateful that I do not live up north (even though I do daydream of a "White Christmas").
4. It might be in the high twenties tonight -- oh boy.
5. He went out tiger hunting there is really nothing to say about this one.
6.I hope that in this semester studying regularly will keep my mind from wandering .
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to nothing since that was yesterday, tomorrow my plans include puppy proofing the house and Sunday, I want to RELAX!

Daily Pic: It's cold!

I wake up to my car being covered in ice! As a true Floridian, this has never happened. I was so unprepared. I managed to find a spatula, but I felt pretty silly. I was definitely late for work and freezing all day.

As close to snow as we will ever see.

And, in true Florida fashion, the temperature rises and I get to drive home and watch a pretty sunset.

New Year's Resolutions Update

So I might have had a few drinks this week already and I might have not been blogging every day as planned. They say most people quit their New Year's Resolutions within days... and I'm trying really hard to not be one of them.

Real Simple magazine posted a little article about staying motivated. It might be helpful for you. My favorite part was working on your goals every single day. This is a challenge for me--especially when it comes to thesis preparation. Some days I simply just do NOT want to look at journal articles, but I know that I need to. If I just read something every day that would help my research, I would be able to stay motivated and focus on the end result (GRADUATING!) would be oh so rewarding.

Read the article here.

In related news: According to my sign, "no resolution is unrealistic." Read the best resolutions for your sign here.

Daily Boast: Blogging

Last year I had 19,720 hits on my Tampa Examiner page. The average Tampa Bay Examiner blog had about 9,000 and the average Bars & Clubs Examiner page had 3,000.

I must be doing something right. This year I hope to blog nearly everyday and hopefully that number can double.

Daily Addiction: Popchips

I have a tendency to snack at work. I take a little trip to the vending machine and any sort of healthy plan is right out the window. Luckily I heard about Popchips and gave them a try and I really like them. I usually hate any kind of low fat or "baked" chip, but these are pretty tasty. Scott says they taste like bad rice cakes, but I disagree! Either way a bag is nicely tucked in my desk drawer.

Yesterday's Pic: How I've Felt for Two Days

The past two days I have felt in a haze from New Year's Eve festivities. Today is the first morning where I woke up feeling rested and conscious. While I might be sore from a mini boot camp session last night, I feel pretty good. Day two with no soda. This might be harder to keep up when I return to work...

Friday Fill-in #157 (#1 for me!)

So since I intend on blogging every day, I decided I need some sort of structure that would encourage to log in and post something. Hello Friday Fill-In. I found this on someone's blog that I follow, and it seems like the perfect quick blogging fix for those lazy Fridays.

ffi

1. Last night was one of the wildest New Year's Eve of my life. Nine bars + nine hours = one wicked hangover.
2. I am definitely looking forward to this year.
3. The funniest thing about last night was squeezing seven people in a Ford Focus. Have you ever ridden in a trunk? Yeah, me neither, but Scott knows.
4. As the year ends.... so where do we go from here?
5. He said dude, seriously; she said seriously, dude.
6. Happiness DOES exist and it's up to us to find it.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to staying in and relaxing, tomorrow my plans include cleaning and working out, and Sunday, I want to relax before heading back to work.

Daily Want: Bitches on a Budget

I usually never pay attention to the Facebook ads that run on the side of your screen (they usually are asking me if I'm engaged or if I like to party), but this particular ad for a book caught my eye.

Bitches on a Budget: Sage Advice for Surviving Tough Times in Style by Rosalyn Hoffman seems like a perfect book to read in January--the first motivational month of the year. The Amazon reviews made the book seem like talking about budgeting can be a hilarious topic, and the author has been known to write some pretty stellar stuff.

Verdict: I just ordered it and I will report back soon.

Daily Pic: Happy New Year

12.31.09 / Mahuffer's on Indian Shores Beach / Scott, me, Ian, Royce, Annie, Andrew, & Jamie -- The New Year's Crew

2*0*1*0

Hello 2010. I have a lot in store for you and I hope you can handle it. I told Scott that last year was a time of transition—starting a thesis, losing a close friend, moving in with him, starting a new job… It was both an exciting and yet exasperating year. So now that I’m employed, settled with a wonderful guy, and hopefully making thesis progress, I hope that 2010 will be a year of “motivation.” Now that I’ve got all stuff together, it’s time to just get things done. And, here is what I’m going to:

001: Write & defend a thesis. A summer graduation sounds nice, and perhaps a joint vacation for Scott’s 30th and my graduation would be scheduled. I did find a cruise that would have us sipping cocktails on the beach in Cozumel on his big day. This also means I will need a passport which is also on the list of things to do this year.

002: Blog every day…on all three blogs. Yes, I have three. I will continue to do Tampa Nightlife blogs on Examiner.com, I will start to use Clearwater Current more frequently (and hope you do too!), and I will update on this personal blog as well. I think that I will post a picture every day, one freebie that I found online, and perhaps an update on my fitness and educational goals.

003: So about that fitness goal…I went to Fit for Fashion on December 30th for a fitness assessment. It was not terrible but it was not good either. She is running a “Little Black Dress” competition that I signed up for (It seems pretty motivational!), and hopefully I will score some fitness tips, take some classes, and remained focused on being healthy. I need to start using weights and put my EA Active for Wii to good use!

004: Continue to cook at home and no more junk food! Really, I mean it.

005: Okay, this is a big one—no more beer. Well, maybe once a week on date nights with Scotty. But really, if I’m going to be paying someone to help me meet my fitness goals I do not want to ruin it by drinking my calories. I won’t make myself suffer, but I also don’t need a beer or two on a daily basis or binge drink. That’s no fun.

006: Take care of my car. It’s a little beater now, but it still is my beater. It will be paid off by February and that little baby is all mine. A new set of tires and a car wash are on January’s agenda.

007: Save. I am pretty good on budgeting. I get things paid when I need to and I spend the rest on myself. However, this year I should start saving for a *new car* because who knows how long my little Neon will last.

008: I read an old Myspace blog about friends that I was grateful for in 2007, and what is amazing is that the most important people are still in my life. I gained someone pretty great, Scott, but everyone else has remained a constant in my life and I really appreciate that. I hope to continue to make time for my friends and to always be there for them when they need me. Nick, Kris, Maxine, Ashley, & Lia are still big parts of my life and I’m eternally grateful. Holly and Christine help me keep my sanity via gchat at work, and I couldn't ask for more!

009: Ride my bike on the water, enjoy beach days, take the dogs for long walks, and appreciate all that this area has to offer.

010: Oh, and did I mention… GRADUATE?!

I've never been so ready to begin a new year. Let's do this!
