Coffee Pod Seed Starters

Coffee is kind of my love language. I love trying new blends or mixing different flavors to create a deliciously caffeinated experience. I typically use coffee pods without even thinking about it, but I've been reading a lot of articles lately on reusing and recycling various products. I heard that you could make seed starters with your used coffee pods, so I got to work!

This easy project would be fun to do on an early morning (after a few cups of coffee of course!) or as a sunny day activity. I know that my son had fun watching and patting down the dirt, so this would be fun to try for all ages.

After I made a few morning batches of coffee, I had a few empty coffee pods to use. The process is very simple, and you can definitely tweak to your own gardening preferences. I have a black thumb and have never been able to keep a plant last long, but even I could conquer these seed starters!

Supplies Needed:

  • Empty McCafรฉ coffee pods
  • Soil
  • Seeds
  • Saran Wrap

Begin by peeling away the foil, emptying the coffee grounds (you can use old coffee grounds in your garden, FYI!), removing the inner liner, and fill with soil.

Add your favorite seeds (I used cilantro and basil), and lay your coffee pods in a flat box. You can cover with saran wrap to help them grow faster! Keep the soil moist. Within a week, you should see your seeds sprouting.
